Star Trek Continues: E09 What Ships are For certainly has everything we look for when seeking to renew the acquaintance of old friends with new faces. –  Christina Brown, Guest Contributor

 

As a hard core fan of the original Star Trek universe (before what’s his name rebooted it) I was delighted to discover that there were fan films still being produced. Some of them are rather amateurish, others quite professional. As someone in the entertainment industry, I notice things like that.

Star Trek Continues: E09 What Ships are For certainly has everything we look for when seeking to renew the acquaintance of old friends with new faces.  Sure, Kirk’s voice is a little off, Spock’s skin tone and bone structure are too, but the feel and mannerisms are all there. It’s interesting that they added a ship’s counselor, in the original series, Bones was more or less the acting ship’s counselor.

Standard ST:TOS story line, planet in distress and Kirk finds a way to get (and lose) the girl, save a world (mostly) and come up with a creative solution that for once only skirts the Prime Directive instead of totally shattering it. And as was the case with Gene Roddenberry’s original vision, this fan film makes a pertinent statement about today. I’ll leave it to you to discover.

The special effects, the sets, hair styles, costumes and props all faithfully reflected those from ST:TOS. And as TOS, there’s little gratuitous sex or violence, just a good story with good acting. John DeLancie was also a nice surprise.

For anyone who is a TOS (or, for that matter, any part of the unrebooted ST universe) this is a must see. And while you’re seeing it, make sure to let CBS know just how unhappy you are with them for stifling more good ST films. If they won’t give them to us themselves, the least they can do is figure out a way to partner with these good film makers and writers and continue to profit from one of the most successful series TV has ever known. Even if NBC had it first.
