Streaming Video Usage Spikes During Huge Northeast Blizzard

Streaming video usage in the Washington, D.C. area, which saw a deluge of about 17.8 inches of snow per Weather.com, was up 12% on Saturday from the past month’s average peak bandwidth usage, according to data analyzed by Fremont, Calif.-based Procera Networks. – Cynthia Littleton, Variety

Hulu Picks Up Triumph the Insult Comic Dog 2016 Election Special

The one-hour special will be available to Hulu subscribers beginning in early February. In “Triumph’s Election Special 2016,” Hulu’s first partnership with Funny Or Die, Triumph hits the presidential campaign trail, traveling to Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina to crash campaign events and mock the media’s thirst for controversy. Triumph has already visited a Democratic debate and a Tea Party convention, as well as a string of Ted Cruz bus appearances. – Todd Spangler, Variety

Netflix’s CEO predicts genetically modified humans will fight AI robots in battle for Earth

While speaking at the DLD Conference in Munich, Germany, [Netflix CEO Reed Hastings] said he’s not worried about a Terminator-like apocalypse. Netflix now available around the world

Netflix launched its service globally, simultaneously bringing its internet TV network to more than 130 new countries around the world. The company made the announcement, and the service went live, during a keynote by co-founder and CEO Reed Hastings at CES 2016. – Robert Briel, Broadband TV News

Netflix Recruits Judd Apatow, Handing 2-Season Order to Lesley Arfin Comedy ‘Love’

Netflix has given an eye-popping two-season commitment to a comedy series from Judd Apatow and “Girls” alum Lesley Arfin that offers an unvarnished take on a modern relationship. “Love,” produced by Legendary TV, will star “Community” player Gillian Jacobs and Paul Rust in the lead roles of Mickey and Gus, a couple in the throes of experiencing the “exhilarations and humiliations of intimacy, commitment, and other things they were hoping to avoid.” The series is targeted for debut in 2016.
