Connected TV now fastest-growing video segment in advertising

The survey, conducted by independent consulting firm Advertiser Perceptions, found that more than three-quarters (78%) of marketers surveyed plan to buy ad inventory on streaming TV within the next 12 months and while only 2% of those surveyed said they never used video in their ads, 49% use video frequently, 38% use it occasionally, and 11% use it in all campaigns. – Joseph O’Halloran, Rapid TV News https://ift.tt/2y99vaH

YouTube promises expansion of sponsorships, other monetization tools for creators

[C]reator backlash is still making itself known. Just read the Twitter replies or comment thread on Susan Wojcicki’s announcement. YouTube’s smaller creators feel they’ve been unfairly punished because of the misdeeds of a few high-profile stars. They’re angry that they don’t have visibility into why their videos are seeing reduced viewership – they only know that something changed. – Sarah Perez, TechCrunch https://tcrn.ch/2Hf4TUy

Spotify says 2 million users suppressed ads on its free service

That’s not an insignificant number, and it’s understandable why Spotify is cracking down on them. As the company explains in an amended F1 filing with the SEC this week, these users forced the company to adjust its metrics and key performance indicators. The disclosure notes, “Unauthorized access to our Service may cause us to misstate key performance indicators, which once discovered, corrected, and disclosed, could undermine investor confidence in the integrity of our key performance indicators and could cause our stock price to drop significantly.” – Swapna Krishna, Engadget https://engt.co/2ISVAH0

You Will Never Get Rich as a YouTuber

YouTube is rife with success stories, some more deserving than others. And those lucky enough to soar into the rarified top three percent of channels manage to secure around 90 percent of the views on the platform. Not there yet? Too bad. And even if you made it, according to Mathias Bärtl, the Offenburg University professor behind the research, it’s likely your earnings just clear $16,000 a year—right in the bottom 12 percent of income for a single person in the US. – Bryan Menegus, Gizmodo http://gizmo.do/Or89Ob5

Fox Network Group To Run 6-Second Ads, Pioneered By YouTube

YouTube last year introduced the format of non-skippable, six-second bumper spots. Fox Networks Group and YouTube jointly made today’s announcement at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. The companies believe that six-seconds is long enough to provide what FNG calls “appreciable brand lift” without hurting the “optimal user experience.” – David Lieberman, Deadline Hollywood http://dlvr.it/PNk4Bh

More Android phones than ever are covertly listening for inaudible sounds in ads

The apps silently listen for ultrasonic sounds that marketers use as high-tech beacons to indicate when a phone user is viewing a TV commercial or other type of targeted audio. A representative sample of just five of the 234 apps have been downloaded from 2.25 million to 11.1 million times, according to the researchers, citing official Google Play figures. None of them discloses the tracking capabilities in their privacy policies. – Dan Goodin, Ars Technica http://ift.tt/2qgmZN2
