The Pirate Bay won’t be blocked on its home turf

Numerous countries order their internet service providers block The Pirate Bay, but its home country of Sweden won’t be one of them… at least, for now. A Stockholm court has ruled that Sweden can’t make ISPs block the piracy site, since those companies aren’t responsible for what their customers do. The networks aren’t participating in any crimes, according to the ruling — they’re just the delivery medium. – Jon Fingas, Engadget

Popular Torrent and Streaming Sites Blocked in Denmark

Following a complaint from Rights Alliance, a Danish court has ordered ISPs to block 12 pirate sites including KickassTorrents, RARBG and TubePlus. With these blockades rightsholders hope to steer people towards legal content. One of the affected site owners, however, believe it serves as free advertising. […] Following a complaint from the local Rights Alliance (RettighedsAlliancen) group the blocklist was updated with 12 popular torrent, streaming and MP3 download sites. The new domains are free-tv-video-online.me, watchseries.lt ,solarmovie.is, tubeplus.me, mp3vip.org, rarbg.com, extratorrent.cc, isohunt.to, eztv.ch, kickass.to, torrentz.eu and music-bazaar.com. – Ernesto, TorrentFreak

Downloading movies from The Pirate Bay is easier than ever and ISPs are helpless to stop it

The Pirate Bay and others have started using a middleman called CloudFlare to help them better deal with traffic and to also protect them against DDoS attacks and deliver Full SSL encryption. Because these CloudFlare features are involved when it comes to routing traffic, it looks like identifying information about the torrent websites and their IPs are hidden to ISPs, and thus most blocking measures are no longer effective. – Chris Smith, BGR

Russia Wants to Be the Second Country to Block Tor

Certain domains have been blocked in Russia since 2012, when a blacklist law went into effect, but the current legislation relies on individual internet service providers to block these sites. Many citizens easily bypass the barriers with tools like Tor and VPN, or virtual private network, services, which allow them to tunnel traffic through alternative IP addresses and appear as if they are located outside of Russia. […] Governments can block access to VPN services by blocking access from IP addresses linked to VPN providers. Blocking Tor is more complex, and requires identifying and blocking the destination nodes traffic travels through rather than the URL or IP address. – Kari Paul, MOTHERBOARD

32 Sites Blocked in India Over Content from ISIS

Following an order issued by the Department of Telecom in India, ISPs have blocked 32 sites including Vimeo, Dailymotion, GitHub and Pastebin across the country. […] Indian ruling party BJP’s National Head Arvind Gupta confirmed the block order via Twitter, citing ‘anti-India content’ hosted on those sites from terrorist outfit ISIS […] While Gupta claims that those sites which remove the objectionable content in question will be unblocked, the block order is problematic for a number of reasons: it doesn’t clearly state to ISPs why they have to block these sites and for how long; furthermore, the blocks are site-wide and affect users who depend on these online services for work. – Abhimanyu Ghoshal,The Next Web

DirecTV subscribers shut out of World Cup live streaming on mobile devices

DIRECTV customers are unable to see streaming mobile content on smartphones and tablets because WatchESPN-enabled networks covering the world’s biggest sporting event are not available on the satellite TV service. Only Spanish-language broadcasts from the Univision family of networks are available via live stream to DirecTV customers. ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC are carrying live coverage of the 64-match soccer tournament, which runs through the July 13 championship final, and DirecTV subscribers can watch at home or set their DVRs via smartphone or tablet to record matches. They just can’t stream them live on the go in English like Comcast Xfinity, Dish Network and Verizon FiOS subscribers. – Dave Sottile, PennLive.com http://ift.tt/1luWl8K
