Analyst: If Cable Companies Lose Set-Top Box Money, They’ll Just Charge More For TV

In a recent report for New Street Research, industry analyst Jonathan Chaplin seeks to allay investors’ concerns about the possible loss of set-top box (STB) revenue. “STB revenue is just video revenue in disguise,” writes Chaplin, who notes that if the industry has to recoup that lost income, it “would simply reclassify revenue.” – Chris Morran, Consumerist

Senators blast Comcast, other cable firms for “unfair billing practices”

Six Democratic US senators today (Ron Wyden, Bernie Sanders, Jeff Merkley, Al Franken, Ed Markey, & Elizabeth Warren) criticized Comcast and other TV and broadband providers for charging erroneous fees, such as cable modem rental fees billed to customers who bought their own modems. The senators have written a letter to Federal Communications Commission Chairman Tom Wheeler asking the commission to “stop unfair billing practices.” – Jon Brodkin, Ars Technica

Roku unveils hybrid streaming box that works with cable

The box is particularly compelling considering FCC chairman Tom Wheeler’s recent comments, in which he suggested that consumers should be able to choose their own cable boxes, as they would for other equipment, like a cable modem. This might start to usher in that era, particularly as consumers get adjusted to this “hybrid” approach that includes cable connectivity, as well as support for a multitude of streaming services. Sky Q launches on February 9 and it doesn’t come cheap

Sky Q will support UHD (4K) broadcasts, as well as 4K streaming services. However, 4K content will not be available at launch, with Sky offering no indication as to when it will launch, or if it will cost extra. Ignoring cable industry protest, FCC says it will “unlock the set-top box”

Customers would still have to buy TV service from a cable, telco, or satellite firm. But just as mobile broadband customers can choose from many smartphones to use on a wireless network, pay-TV customers should be able to choose what device they watch TV on, an FCC official said in a phone call with reporters. Groups Ask FCC To Reform Set-Top Box Market, Say New Rules Could Save Consumers Billions Every Year

While the cable industry hasn’t fessed up to how much it makes leasing set-top boxes to their customers, in July, lawmakers crunched some numbers and found that it could be a $20 billion industry, with consumers paying up to $232 every year on that equipment. [The Consumer Federation of America and Public Knowledge] are now asking the Federal Communications Commission to begin a rulemaking proceeding to reform the video set-top box market, saying cable and pay-TV companies are overcharging consumers by $6 billion to $14 billion annually. – Mary Beth Quirk, The Consumerist
