Online video accounted for 60 per cent of global data flows in 2018, the report states, or 1 zettabyte of data (one thousand billion billion bytes). David Byrne Pens Op-Ed Asking for Streaming Transparency

In October 2013, David Byrne was more critical of music streaming services in an essay for The Guardian, warning that the medium’s low royalty rates would dissuade artists from pursuing a career in music and that “our future as a musical culture looks grim.” At the time, Byrne blamed streaming services – especially Spotify – for their “minuscule” pay-per-stream rates. Now, however, Byrne takes aim at record labels for pocketing much of the advanced money from streaming services, even though there is no physical production and distribution costs involved. – Daniel Kreps, Rolling Stone

Netflix Adapting Lemony Snicket’s ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events’ As Series

Netflix is entering a new area: live-action family entertainment. On the heels of picking up Awesomeness TV’s live-action comedy Richie Rich, the streaming company has acquired rights to the best-selling series of books A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket, with plans to adapt them as a live-action series. Netflix to Stagger Rollout of ‘All Hail King Julien’ Series from DreamWorks Animation

Netflix will bow the first five episodes of DreamWorks Animation’s “All Hail King Julien” kidvid — a spinoff of the studio’s “Madagascar” franchise — on Dec. 19, with additional installments to follow next year. […] New 22-minute episodes of “All Hail King Julien” the series will debut throughout 2015. The release deviates from Netflix’s standard practice of releasing all episodes of an original series at once; DWA and Netflix have previously said the lengthy process of producing animation prevents a binge-style launch. […] In “All Hail King Julien,” the titular lemur holds court before the Zoosters arrive on Madagascar. United: Wi-Fi, streaming video coming to regional jets

United Airlines says it will add Wi-Fi and streaming in-flight entertainment to more than 200 of the bigger regional jets flown that fly for the company’s United Express affiliates. […] The in-flight entertainment options will debut later, coming online “early next year,” United says in a statement. The company says the specified United Express aircraft will get offerings that include “a wide range of movies and television shows.” Customers will be able to stream the options via Wi-Fi-enabled iOS and Android devices using United’s mobile app. Customers also will be able to view the offerings on their laptop computers. – Ben Mutzabaugh,USA TODAY
