Study: Netflix Dominates Canadian Online Streaming

The U.S. video streaming giant’s local service, Netflix Canada, now accounts for up to 40 percent of bandwidth usage during evening hours, according to a report issued Thursday by Canadian researcher Sandvine. That compares to Netflix representing 34.2 percent of downstream usage in primetime evening hours in the U.S. market, according to a March 2014 Sandvine report. […] Sandvine said the dominance of Netflix and YouTube makes the Canadian market ripe for new U.S. streaming services. “No other paid over-the-top video service accounts for more than 1 percent of traffic in the evening, making Canada a prime candidate for the introduction of new streaming options,” the report said. – Etan Vlessing,The Hollywood Reporter

Netflix Warns Regulator Not to Tax Canadian Streaming Service – Hollywood Reporter

“The imposition of a ‘Netflix tax’ or ‘OTT Tax’ may make it more difficult for Netflix to offer access to this content at the same affordable rate,” Corie Wright, director of global public policy at Netflix, told the [Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission] in an 11-page submission filed on June 27, 2014. […] So slapping a tax on Netflix Canada “might translate into an increase in price without … a commensurate benefit for Canadian content, its producers, or Canadian consumers,” the Netflix submission argued. – Etan Vlessing, The Hollywood Reporter http://ift.tt/1o5aIhq
