In just 24 hours, 5,000 Android devices are conscripted into mining botnet

The previously unseen malware driving the botnet has worm-like capabilities that allow it to spread with little or no user interaction required, researchers with Chinese security firm Netlab wrote in a blog post published Sunday. Once infected, Android phones and TV boxes scan networks for other devices that have Internet port 5555 open. Port 5555 is normally closed, but a developer tool known as the Android Debug Bridge opens the port to perform a series of diagnostic tests. Netlab’s laboratory was scanned by infected devices from 2,750 unique IPs in the first 24 hours the botnet became active, a figure that led researchers to conclude that the malware is extremely fast moving. – Dan Goodin, Ars Technica http://ift.tt/2E4H641

Now even YouTube serves ads with CPU-draining cryptocurrency miners

The ads contain JavaScript that mines the digital coin known as Monero. In nine out of 10 cases, the ads will use publicly available JavaScript provided by Coinhive, a cryptocurrency-mining service that’s controversial because it allows subscribers to profit by surreptitiously using other people’s computers. The remaining 10 percent of the time, the YouTube ads use private mining JavaScript that saves the attackers the 30 percent cut Coinhive takes. Both scripts are programmed to consume 80 percent of a visitor’s CPU, leaving just barely enough resources for it to function. – Dan Goodin, Ars Technica http://ift.tt/2FjaALw

Streaming sites mine cryptocurrency while you watch free movies

AdGuard discovered two Openload domains secretly mining for Monero without users’ knowledge or consent. Openload, one of the most popular streaming sites, has an estimated 330 million visitors per month. Videos from Openload are often embedded on other sites and, in many cases, the mining script loads when videos are launched. AdGuard estimated that the monthly earnings reach $95,000. – Ms. Smith, CSO http://ift.tt/2Ce9ro0

uTorrent Is Installing a Program Could Blow Up Your Computer

Packaged with the latest version of µTorrent is a program called Epic Scale, a surreptitious digital currency miner that secretly uses your computer’s processing power in order to make money for µTorrent and Epic Scale. There is a clause in Epic Scale’s policy that says its software might literally destroy your computer. […] An administrator for µTorrent confirmed that the program was, in fact, being installed on Windows machines, where it was generating Litecoin (which is similar to Bitcoin) and sending them back to µTorrent and Epic Scale. The program could be uninstalled, but only if you actually realized it existed in the first place. – Jason Koebler, MOTHERBOARD
