The messy deals behind unwatchable streaming apps

My new Roku TV can’t run the WatchESPN app that works fine on my Roku 3 box. What’s the problem here?

[T]his resulted from a decision by ESPN and its corporate parent Disney (the WatchDisney app doesn’t work on Roku TVs either) to control the potential audience for their online streaming — essentially, saying that Internet viewing is only okay if it requires pressing or clicking enough buttons first. – Rob Pegoraro, USA TODAY

Netflix unveils seal of approval for streaming-optimized TVs

Some of the first companies to make Netflix-recommended TVs at the show include Sony, LG, Vizio and Sharp, as well as makers of Roku’s TV sets. Some devices, including LG’s 2015 webOS TVs, are expected to be on display at CES. The program will launch in the U.S. first, but it obviously would make sense for the company to expand it to its other markets as well. – Janko Roettgers, Gigaom

Roku TV is gearing up for a future full of 4K

Roku is going 4K! Eventually. The company has announced plans for a 4K reference model of a Roku TV, and that TCL TV would be the first to partner with the company in the Ultra HD space. What does that mean? Well, it means soon enough Roku will have a board and software capable of spitting out unnaturally hi-res video from the likes of Netflix (one of the first to announce it will deliver 4K through Roku TV), but that it will be up to TV manufacturers to turn that into a consumer product. […] As for Roku’s standalone devices? They don’t support 4K. And the company wouldn’t comment on any new models that may be on the roadmap right now. But, it’s probably a safe bet that they’re in the works. – Terrence O’Brien,Engadget

Roku TV: A Smart TV That Helps You Cut Out Cable

At the heart of the problem: Most TVs are dumb. That applies even to many recent “smart” ones, which tout bells and whistles like 3-D, scrolling tweets and cameras that turn our bodies into remote controls.
Here’s what I really want from a smart TV in 2014:
  • Access to all of the sources of video on the Internet and over the air.
  • Frequent updates, since there’s always new stuff on the Internet.
  • Universal search to find shows and movies across all my services.
  • Simple, intuitive switching to other video sources, like game consoles.
  • And yes, decent picture quality.
