Amazon grabs a piece of the Yankees network in a $3.47 billion deal

Disney sold its stake in the YES Network to an investor group that includes the Yankees, Amazon and Sinclair Broadcasting. The group announced today that it was acquiring the 80 percent stake in the YES Network previously held by Disney in a $3.47 billion deal. The special edition, which was only notable for its low price was the belle of the ball on Black Friday with every major vendor who had it selling out of the product. It was Roku’s brilliant move to capture black Friday. At $25.00 it was hard to resist for those looking to try out the platform for the first time or expand on what they already had. It got more press than the Fire Stick or Apple TV or Chromecast. But it was not a new product. It had no new special features and it was only sold as part of an event sale. Unlike Amazon, Roku does not sell below costs and make up for it with purchases later like Apple or Amazon. So why did they do it and how could they charge so little for it? FTC investigation into Apple heats up, music streaming services hit with subpoenas

Apple’s App Store guidelines call for a 30 percent fee to be charged to any sales by a subscription service that signs up users through an iOS app and uses iAP, which is essentially every paid music streaming service. This forces music streaming services like Spotify, Rdio, Rhapsody, and Tidal — who all charge $9.99 a month for their subscription service on their own sites — to charge users who sign up through their respective iOS apps $12.99 a month to make up for the lost revenue it must pay to Apple. – Micah Singleton, The Verge
