Turn any old, slow computer into a speedy Chromebook with this free software

It’s worth noting that the name Chromebook is trademarked by Google, so that’s not technically what you’re getting when you install CloudReady on your computer. But Neverware uses Chromium, the open source version of the Chrome operating system, which makes for a nearly identical experience, complete with all the apps and services you’d find on an actual Chromebook. – Jacob Siegal, BGR

Busted Pirate Told to Get 200K YouTube Hits or Face Huge Fine

A software pirate is facing the most unusual punishment ever seen in a copyright infringement action. The man lost a case brought by an anti-piracy group but couldn’t pay damages, so instead agreed to star in PSA showcasing his life as a pirate. If that film doesn’t get 200K hits on YouTube, he’ll be required to pay a large fine. – Andy, TorrentFreak

Starting September 14, Amazon is pulling the plug permanently on Google TV. This means that any television that runs Google TV software will no longer be able to stream TV shows and movies from the Amazon Video app, Liliputing reported. Streaming devices that support Google TV software and may be affected include LG, Sony, Vizio, ASUS, Hisense, Netgear, and Hausbell, a user on the Google TV Forum reported. Google has been focusing more on Android TV rather than Google TV lately anyway, but Amazon doesn’t support Android TV set-top boxes yet either. Amazon also doesn’t work with Google Chromecast, TechHive reported. – Stephanie Dube Dwilson, Heavy.com

Microsoft says that the update, simply called the July Xbox One Update, will be prompting users to download the software starting this week. However, users should not expect any new features to come with the update since it is simply meant to prepare the console for Windows 10 game streaming and for backward compatibility with the titles that are available on the Xbox 360. – Menchie Mendoza, Tech Times

I hate iTunes. And I think Apple does, too

iTunes went from being a svelte piece of software to an octopus of an application—and with that, an array of problems began popping up. iTunes 7, for instance, saw 18 updates in less than 12 months. Likewise, iTunes 10 (with Ping!) had 19 updates in a year. iTunes 11, meanwhile, needed 17 patches in its 11 month life. On the bright side, things are looking better for iTunes 12—with only three releases since its rollout in October […], it’s fair to ask if iTunes is any better. All this history sidesteps the injection of the App Store into iTunes. With the launch of iOS 2, iPhone owners needed somewhere to download their various digital goodies from, and someone in Cupertino thought it would be a great idea to make iTunes that place. – John Patrick Pullen, Quartz

Users will also be able to clean up their expanded hard drives with the ability to delete episodes of a specific series, delete watched content or even purge the entire list at once. The new deleting options will be available for TabloTV apps on Mac, PC, Android TV, Android tablets, Amazon Fire TV and (soon) to Roku. – Ryan Michael Downey, The Streaming Advisor
