Netflix Adding Audio Description Tracks for Visually Impaired, Starting with ‘Marvel’s Daredevil’

Netflix is adding audio-description tracks on select titles for subscribers who are blind or have poor vision, staring with original series “Marvel’s Daredevil.” […] Netflix said it will audio description to more titles in the next few weeks, including current and prior seasons of “House of Cards,” “Orange Is the New Black,” Tina Fey’s “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” and “Marco Polo.” The audio-description track for “Daredevil” is available on all Netflix-supported devices, with the exception of Apple TV, for which Apple is in the process of certifying. – Todd Spangler, Variety 

HBO’s ‘Silicon Valley’ to Stream Free Episode on Amazon’s Twitch

HBO, ahead of the premiere of season two of tech-startup spoof “Silicon Valley,” is teaming with Amazon.com’s twitch.tv videogame-casting service for a promo event that will include a free stream of the first season’s pilot episode.[…] According to Twitch, the event will be the first time a TV network has streamed a full episode on the service. TBS staged a similar stunt on Twitch for “King of the Nerds” season three in January, which included a preview of the first 30 minutes of the new season’s premiere. – Todd Spangler, Variety

‘Full House’ to Return for New Season on Netflix

Netflix is one step closer to ordering a new season of “Full House,” the ABC Television Network sitcom that ran from 1987-95 starring John Stamos and Bob Saget. According to TVLine.com, which broke the news, the new show would be called “Fuller House” and would focus on Candace Cameron Bure’s character of eldest daughter D.J. and her best friend Kimmy Gibbler (Andrea Barber). – Todd Spangler, Variety

Jay Z Launches Tidal Streaming-Music Service

Jay Z, the stage name of Shawn Carter, in January acquired Sweden-based Aspiro for $56 million. The artists announced onstage at the New York event Monday were introduced as co-owners of the company, representing the first artist-owned digital-music service — a salvo lobbed against companies like Spotify and Pandora. […] TIDAL will not offer a free version of the service; the standard-audio version (Tidal Premium) will be $9.99 per month and the high-def audio version (Tidal HiFi) will be $19.99 per month. YouTube Star Bethany Mota Takes Stake in BeautyCon

YouTube fashion and beauty vlogger Bethany Mota, who has 8.4 million followers on the Google video site, has invested an undisclosed stake in BeautyCon, which is looking to grow beyond its roots as a live conference into a media brand. Mota, who was one of the YouTubers who recently interviewed President Obama after his State of the Union address, was a big draw at the 2014 BeautyCon in Los Angeles. She’s also been featured in ad campaigns from YouTube, and has a deal with Aeropostale for her own branded line of clothing, accessories and perfumes. – Todd Spangler, Variety

‘House of Cards’ Season 3 Pirated, With China Top Country for Downloaders

Within the first 24 hours after season three hit torrent services, there were 681,889 unique downloaders worldwide, according to piracy-tracking firm Excipio. That’s more than twice as many as for “House of Cards” season two, which had 320,927 downloaders within 24 hours of being pirated back in February 2014. Whalerock to Launch Digital ‘Hubs’ for Celebs Including Kardashians, Howard Stern

Production firm Whalerock Industries is hoping to scare up more digital dollars with a new strategy to launch media “hubs” in partnership with celebrities — who, it seems, are looking for ways to connect directly with (and monetize) their fanbases despite the plethora of digital outlets already at their disposal.
