Billboard is changing its albums chart to count YouTube streams

Billboard has announced that YouTube streams will be factored into the Billboard 200 albums chart starting early next year. Video streams from other platforms will also count, including Apple, Spotify, Tidal, and Vevo, and Billboard says the change will also impact genre album consumption charts, like country, Latin, and others. – Dani Deahl, The Verge » https://trib.al/sIY0gLN

Amazon makes its music streaming service free with ads

Instead, Amazon’s free music service serves more as a way to upsell consumers by encouraging them to join Amazon Prime in order to remove the ads from their music. (Prime Music’s 2 million songs are an added perk of a Prime subscription.) This is Amazon’s true motive: lock in more customers to Amazon Prime, ensure they realize the value of the free shipping and other benefits, then get them to renew every year. Once a Prime member, people will shop more often from Amazon, which is where the retailer’s profits lie. – Sarah Perez, TechCrunch » https://tcrn.ch/2s15FOd

Tool, one of the last streaming holdouts, caves ahead of new album

Tool is one of the last big streaming holdouts. In fact, you can’t even buy the band’s first five albums digitally (CDs are available on Amazon, though). In 2017, reports indicated that the group might be willing to soften its stance ahead of a new album, especially since it’s the band’s first in over a decade. In an Instagram post today, the group confirmed Opiate, Undertow, Ænima, Lateralus and 10,000 Days would be available “all digital and streaming formats” at the end of this week. No details on specific services just yet, but it’s a safe bet Spotify, Apple Music, Pandora, Google and Amazon will likely be included. – Billy Steele, Engadget » https://engt.co/2K40K5u

Spotify Lite for Android gets an official launch in 36 countries

The app is designed to work on patchy or weak internet connections and, at just 10MB, it is small enough to cater to lower-end devices that have limited storage or older phones. Spotify Lite is limited to Android devices running version 4.3 or newer, and it is open to both paying and non-paying users. For those worried about maxing out their data plan, the app comes with an optional limit that can tell you when you are close to hitting that buffer. – Jon Russell, TechCrunch » https://tcrn.ch/2NIDNIV

Spotify Shuts Down Ability for Independent Artists to Upload Music Directly

The beta of Spotify’s upload tool will be discontinued July 30, 2019. The original idea with Spotify’s direct-upload test, launched last September, was to provide a simpler way for unsigned artists to get their music on the service and get paid. But the company seems to have determined the complexity involved in monitoring the rights involved — and potential abuse from piracy — made the whole thing more trouble that it was worth. – Todd Spangler, Variety » https://trib.al/JOZoShC

Streaming is secretly fixing your mainstream taste in garbage music

The “optimism index” at indies hit its highest level this year, according to this month’s annual membership survey by Merlin, a group representing more than 2,000 independent labels and music companies. Eighty-five percent of its members were optimistic about the future of their businesses, coinciding with their digital income swelling thanks to streaming. – Joan E.
