Google Adds ‘Kodi’ to Autocomplete Piracy Filter

Google has banned the term “Kodi” from the autocomplete feature of its search engine. This means that the popular software and related suggestions won’t appear unless users type out the full term. Google has previously taken similar measures against “pirate” related terms and confirms that Kodi is targeted because it’s “closely associated with copyright infringement.” – Ernesto, TorrentFreak https://ift.tt/2pM26Y6

Kodi Lands on the Xbox One, Making It the Ultimate Set-Top Box

It isn’t just the inclusion of Kodi that makes the Xbox One so versatile, but it’s the final piece of the puzzle. Kodi is a Swiss Army Knife-like media player that actually spun out of an open-source project on the original Xbox way back in 2002. Kodi, which was formerly called XBMC, allows you to access media on remote drives, making it useful for people with a huge library of old ripped DVDs and home movies. (It’s also great for torrenting pirates.) Yet Kodi’s real power is now found in its add-ons and enormous add-on repository. – Alex Cranz, Gizmodo http://gizmo.do/rH6IO9p

Kodi streaming makes you safer online, says TV Addons

“At the end of the day, you’re definitely far safer streaming through Kodi addons as opposed to visiting sketchy online streaming sites in your web browser. Hollywood might be trying to destroy these addons, but as far as user experience goes these Kodi addons may have saved millions of people from being exposed to malware, crypto-jacking, popups and a whole lot of other “hooey.” – TvAddons.co via Chris Smith, Trusted Reviews http://ift.tt/2jYOPbC

The War on General-Purpose Computing Turns on the Streaming Media Box Community

The difficulty facing the titans of TV is that since neither those who sell Kodi boxes, nor those who write or host add-ons for the software, are engaging in any unauthorized copying by doing so, cases targeting these parties have to rely on other legal theories. So far several legal theories have been used; one in Europe against sellers of Kodi boxes, one in Canada against the owner of the popular Kodi add-on repository TvAddons.co, and two in the United States against TVAddons and a plugin developer. – Jeremy Malcolm & Mitch Stoltz, Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) http://ift.tt/2ydLvCd

Plex’s add-on for Kodi is now free for everyone — Plex Pass no longer required

To use Plex’s Kodi add-on, however, you historically had to be a Plex Pass subscriber, which costs $4.99 per month or $39.99 per year. That changes today because Plex has announced that their Kodi add-on is now available for anyone to use for free. So if you’re running a Plex server, you can now get the full Plex experience right from within Kodi, without having to switch apps or pay anything. – AFTVnews http://ift.tt/2f0ORgM

Microsoft’s Windows 10 To Block Downloads From Kodi, The Pirate Bay, KickassTorrents & Others

Microsoft’s patent relies on fingerprint recognition to identify the source of these illegal files and block them. Along with blocking these files, users who frequently share files without authorization could end up being singled out and punished. This system, if implemented could be much more effective in stomping out piracy than the current system of the copyright holder issuing legal notices. – Delwyn Pinto, Techworm http://ift.tt/2qaA4pR

Kodi Security Risk Emerges After TVAddons Shutdown

TVAddons’ domains are now being run by a law firm which refuses to answer questions but has the power to do whatever it likes with them, within the law of course. Currently, the domains are lying dormant and aren’t doing anything nefarious, but if that position changes, millions of people will have absolutely no idea anything is wrong. – Andy, TorrentFreak http://ift.tt/2vx8LXt

FACT Threatens Users of ‘Pirate’ Kodi Add-Ons

While people who stream pirated content are generally hard to track, since they don’t broadcast their IP-address to the public, FACT says that customer data could be obtained directly from sellers of fully-loaded Kodi boxes. “When we’re working with the police against a company that’s selling IPTV boxes or illicit streaming devices on a large scale, they have records of who they’ve sold them to,” [Kieron Sharp, Federation Against Copyright Theft] noted. – Ernesto, TorrentFreak http://ift.tt/2sPM55s
